Project Apricot

After Orange and Peach, Blender Institute continued with a new open project: Apricot. This time it wasn’t a movie but a 3D game! Starting february 1st 2008, a small team of again the best 3D artist and developers worked on a game jointly with the on-line community. The main character in the game has been based on the short 3D animation open movie Peach. The project ended in august, and in october 2008 the DVD and game was released.

The Game

The original project goal was to work on a cross platform game (at least Linux, Windows, OS X), using Blender for modeling and animation, Crystal Space as 3D engine and delivery platform, and Python for some magic scripting to glue things together. The purpose was to not only make a compelling 3D game experience, but especially to improve and validate the open source 3D game creation pipeline, with industry-standard conditions.

Halfway during the project, we noticed the great advances made in Blender’s internal Game Engine, so we’ve added delivering the project entirely in Blender as a target for Apricot as well.

Targets

• Validation: create full functional game prototype, industry quality
• Crystal Space development: HDR lighting, game logic, character animation
• Blender development: animation prototyping, pipeline improvements, GLSL (node) shading editor, improvements in logic editing (states), general Blender GE improvements.
• Realize in Open Source (GPL/LGPL), deliver in Open Content (Creative Commons)
• Education: Training/workshops, presentations, documentation, DVD

Yo Frankie! is an open source computer game by the Blender Institute.
It is based on the universe and characters of the open source film Big Buck Bunny. In the game, players assume the role of Frank, the sugar glider who was the antagonist of the film Big Buck Bunny. The game has been made using free software, partly as a showcase of what can be achieved with free software.

Un jeu d'arcade en 3D dérivé du film d'animation Big Buck Bunny, par l'Apricot project (de la communauté Blender).
Il peut utiliser au choix les moteurs Crystal Space ou Blender Game Engine (tous deux dans le Bottin).

YoFrankie est un jeu d'arcade mono et multijoueur (2 joueurs en écran splitté) multiplateforme en 3D dérivé du film d'animation Big Buck Bunny (dans le Bottin).
L'objectif original du projet était de travailler sur un jeu multiplateforme (en l'occurrence Linux, Windows & OS X), via Blender pour la modélisation et l'animation, Crystal Space pour le moteur 3D multiplateforme, et Python pour les scripts magiques liant tout cela ensemble.
L'objectif n'était pas tant un impérieux désir d'acquérir une expérience de réalisation de jeux 3D, que d'améliorer et valider une chaîne de création de jeux 3D open source qui réponde aux critères de qualité de l'industrie.

Nous vous suggérons d'utiliser la version Blender car la version Crystal Space a des problèmes d'affichage et 0launch (paquet zeroinstall-injector) ne précise pas où il installe les fichiers.

Astuce :
Pour le plein écran (trouvé par mon fils - alors âgé de 6 ans !!) sous KDE, lancez le jeu, utilisez l'outil KDE de changement de résolution, ne validez pas : après 15s l'écran revient à sa résolution initiale et le jeu passe en plein écran :).

🕵️ Test (BGE) de Louis :
Louis adore : musique malicieuse (cordes de violons pincés) - à l'image de l'histoire, un graphisme BD d'une grande finesse et un gameplay assez bon.
Il y joue en écran splitté alternativement avec les 2 joysticks :)).
