📕 Description [en]

An intuitive editor allows even the most technically-inept players to build levels of their own, complete with custom graphics and interactive NPCs.

Servers made by Graal players using the developmental and administrative tools produced and made available by GraalOnline. These include the level editor, GScript, and the infamous Remote Control.

Controversy

GraalOnline's decision to allow players to purchase playerworlds has been met with mixed responses from the developmental community. Previously, playerworlds were only available by application and subsequent review by the Playerworld Administration Team. This system was not without corruption, but it was generally considered that it kept standards high whilst allowing good content to be created and showcased. Proponents of this new scheme point out that Graal is a business, and that, like any business, it must raise extra finances to assist its survival and expansion. However, its opponents counter that, as anyone with an idea and $99 can now afford to construct their own world, the quality and prestige of Graalian playerworlds is dropping, as no skill is required to get started. Regardless, some truly excellent worlds have found niches in this system, and due to this and the relative financial success of the scheme, it is not likely to be changed any time soon.

Graal :
Graal started its existence as a relatively simple Java game - known then as 'Zelda Online'. Shortly after a new game called Graal has been introduced with a similar theme, but new graphics and new name, now running on PC as standalone Delphi program developed by the French company Linux Cyberjoueurs with Stephane and Stefan.

Perhaps Graal's greatest strength is its customisability. An intuitive editor allows even the most technically-inept players to build levels of their own, complete with custom graphics and interactive NPCs. The latter are developed using a simple - yet surprisingly powerful - language named GScript.

The creative power afforded by these features means that groups of players can combine their skills to produce entire worlds for other Graalians to explore. Indeed, GraalOnline offers hosting options that allow such groups to develop their Playerworlds online, making them (if they so wish) accessible to regular Graalians.

In addition to these player-operated servers, GraalOnline also runs three official worlds: Graal Kingdoms, Zone and Classic. Though they are usually considered conceptually distinct from Playerworlds, they are still largely developed and maintained by volunteer players.

The Graal client was recently converted to C++ and is using part of Torque, granting superior speed and multi-platform compatibility. Builds of the new version - dubbed Graal 3.0 - was available for Windows, Linux and Mac operating systems. In addition, this new version offer fully 3D graphics[1] along with a rehauled scripting engine. Graal3D was released to some criticism around Christmas 2004. In July 2005, A small group of beta testers tested a new Graal client, dubbed Graal4. Graal4 is based on Graal 3.0 but offer better compatibility with Graal 2.0 and offer lot of new features.

Starting in July 2008 GraalOnline games were launched on the App Store for iPhone, gaining millions of additional players. In 2011 a Facebook version followed and in 2013 the first Android version has been released. Thousands of Graal players are now playing the game at any time.
