What is Cinelerra GG Infinity?

Cinelerra GG is a free video editing software that lets you edit your videos and make them look like a movie with transitions, effects and text. You can use it to cut out unsightly parts of your video, rearrange sequences, add beautiful transitions, improve visual detail or audio quality, and add music. Render your new video project directly with YouTube presets. Cinelerra GG Infinity is designed for professionals, but it’s just as good for beginners as it is for getting the most out of their videos.

Resource-saving and simple

Cinelerra GG Infinity is a resource-saving video editing software for Linux. It is characterized by extensive possibilities to modify video and audio media. Through the integration of the software package FFmpeg, hundreds of extensions and codecs therefore are available. It is certainly not comparable with the functionality of the most important commercial video editing software in the field of video postproduction, but it is more than sufficient for common user. It is free and open source. Together with many filmmakers, developers and supporters we pursue a continuous development, hence the additional name Infinity, for a monthly rolling release.

About

Cinelerra is an NLE – Non-Linear Editor – for Linux that provides a way to compose audio and video media. Besides editing, it can be used as an audio/video player, for recording audio or video to include broadcast television programs, creating dvd/bluray media, and touching up old photos. Because cinelerra has many features for uncompressed content, high resolution processing, and compositing, using cinelerra can be quite complex. However, with only a little bit of introduction, even a novice will be able to create simple artful videos.

Cinelerra-gg is licensed under the GNU General Public License (GNU GPL or GPL) which is a free software license giving users the opportunity to run, share, and modify the software. Any included libraries, such as Ffmpeg, are also under the GPL license. Cinelerra-gg used the original cinelerra software (Heroine Virtual) as its base, incorporated the work and modifications made by numerous developers over the years (Community Version), added numerous enhancements over the years, and is continuously being improved. Currently new pre-built versions for many distros are released monthly.

Additional information

Why are there several branches of Cinelerra?

The tastes are different. Just as there are countless different desktop environments for Linux, like GNOME, KDE, Mint etc., there are now also different branches of Cinelerra. The original is by Adam Williams and can be found on his page. There are some other notable branches like Cinelerra-CV and Cinelerra-Einar, which have a large community of fans. Due to the different preferences and ideas of the developers also, the different versions of Cinelerra came into being.

Was Cinelerra-GG not represented earlier on Cinelerra-CV website?

Yes, we used to be together on the Cinelerra-CV website, but due to different development speeds and development directions we decided to have our own website to better realize our ideas. From the very beginning the projects were also developed separately on Cinelerra-CV, despite the desire to work on a common Cinelerra version, but the different branches have grown so far apart that it became more and more difficult to unite it under one roof. The differences were not always obvious to the user, so there was a desire to make the differences clearer and to highlight them with different websites.

Which Cinelerra version do you recommend?

The answer is relatively simple: try it out!

As there are different preferences to the Linux desktop environments, there are certainly also different tastes and preferences at Cinelerra. The other versions also have their strengths and that’s why we recommend simply trying them out. Here are some small hints about the different versions.

Cinelerra-GG: Has a fast development cycle and works mainly according to the Scrum model, i.e. releasing a new release every month, it’s a rolling release, and quickly recording and implementing user feedback. This version focuses on new features, improved stability, fast bug fixing and expansion of the codec base.

Cinelerra-CV: This version focuses on stability. The development philosophy is therefore rather conservative and slower than the other branches. But this variant is extensively tested and also offers support by the developers and the Cinelerra-CV community.

Cinelerra-CVE: This is the personal development of the developer Einar. The goal of Einar and his supporters is to sustainably improve the code base of Cinelerra-CV and add new features. He works tirelessly to release a significantly improved version of Cinelerra-CV. This version is not finished yet, but promises great potential for the future. If you want to take a look at this version in advance, you can compile it yourself.

Cinelerra-HV: This is the version of the inventor Adam Williams. He created Cinelerra and develops it, according to our personal opinion, mainly for his private purposes. Usually a new update comes once a year and this always brings great new features and improvements with it. The Cinelerra-HV variant does not offer developer or community support. Nevertheless it is worthwhile to have a look at it again and again, as it is also the case with the other branches.

If you want to see the exact differences to the other branches at a glance, you will find a PDF document [here]

🌍️ Wikipedia:

Cinelerra-GG Infinity

A separate branch of Cinelerra, Cinelerra-GG (Cin-GG) has integrated the code of Cinelerra-HV from the beginning and its development has taken place first with the site of Cinelerra.org (Cinelerra 4.6-mod, Cinelerra 5.0), then with the site of cinelerra-cv.org (Cinelerra 5.0, Cinelerra 5.1, Cinelerra GG 5.1 (see above)), before continuing its (Cinelerra-GG Infinity) growth in a distinct way now since December 2018 through its own site: Cinelerra-gg.org. Cinelerra-GG is entirely gratis (no costs) and open source (mostly GNU General Public License).

Cinelerra-GG is determined to get as close as possible to what can be expected from professional level video editing software (NLE) for the Linux platform.

It has many features. They include support for recent versions of ffmpeg, Ultra HD up to 8K, two interfaces for audio plug-ins (LADSPA, and LV2 such as Calf Studio Gear), multiple denoisers and motion stabilizers, multi-camera editing, the use of proxies to lighten the workload of a computer, smart folders media filtering, 10-bit color space (10bit + H.265 requires special build), advance trim, live preview of resources, nested clips, shared tracks, group edits, rendering pre-configuration options for YouTube and the ability to save workspace layouts. It supports over 400 video/picture formats for decoding, and over 150 for encoding, including Apple ProRes, AV1, and WEBP. It has a ¨Sketcher" plug-in for free-hand drawing, supports creating HD Blu-ray, and DVDs, and some OpenCV plugins like FindObj.

It supports jog-wheels ShuttlePRO V.2 and ShuttleXpress from Contour Design.

Like the other Cinelerra versions (except Lumiera) Cinelerra-GG uses its own GUI. It has 10 GUI themes to cater to user preferences.

The GG version is under active development, with a stable release at the end of every month. It is supplied as a multi user program pre-packaged for 8 different Linux distributions (Ubuntu, Debian, Arch, OpenSuse, Slackware, Fedora, Centos, Mint), and FreeBSD. When the applicable repository is added to a distribution´s update manager, the monthly updates will appear automatically. In addition, there are single-user builds for the 8 Linux distributions. All builds are available in 64 bit, for Slackware and Ubuntu 14 there are also 32 bit single user builds. The source code is available as (manual) monthly download or from the git.

In addition to the GG version´s monthly releases, it is also available in two Linux variants dedicated to multimedia : AVLinux and Bodhi Linux Media.

Cinelerra-GG communicates with it users and developers through three platforms: its forum (user oriented), a bug tracker (feature requests, bugs, roadmap), and a mailing list (developers discussions). Each monthly release has a significant number of changes resulting from discussions and exchanges of information on these platforms.

Cinelerra-GG has an actively maintained manual, the latest version of which is included in the monthly releases as PDF for off-line reference, and which is accessible from Cinelerra-GG.

En C++.
